Bhagavan Ramana: Kavyakanta Ganapati Muni

7 Nov

Kavya Kanta Ganapati Muni who had a great regard for Bhagavan and was in Tiruvannamalai for a long time. In later days, he moved to Nimpura, Kharagpur and spent his last days there.  On one particular day, Bhagavan Ramana came to know that it was Kavyakanta Ganapati Muni’s last day and since morning Bhagavan neither partook of any food nor allowed anyone else to eat. At about 5.00 PM that day he at last told everyone that Ganapati Muni is no longer in this world. Right after that, the news came from Nimpura that Kavyakanta Ganapati Muni has attained Siddhi.

Dear sir,I am surprised to see a Lahore connection to late Sri Kavyakantha VasishtaGanaathi Muni.I never came across such a connection in my research work on Kavyakantha.Probably I am the only one who is having an authoritative proof on the death of Late Kavyakantha. I am holding the photo of his mortal body surrounded by his son Mahadeva Sastry, and many other relatives and sishyas of Kavyakantha vasishta Ganapathi Muni.He died in Nimpura of Khargapur town in his small hut supposed to be his proposed Ashram. It was on 25-7-1936.Atelegram was sent immediately to Bhagawan Sri Ramana Maharshi-GLNMurthy

My name is Ramesh Kumar Vadlamani, I am grand son of Bhilai Mataji, who is follower of Ganapati Muni whom we call Ganapati Tatagaru, he gave mantra diksha to my grandmother(Mataji) and I am very fortune to say that me too have taken, I know many of you may think how it’s possible that I can explain you only when you meet either me or meet my grand mother.

i would like to know whether any memorial / samadhi exists at Nimpura where Sri Ganapathy Muni passes away

  4. G.L.N.Murhty December 23, 2009 at 2:13 pm #

This is in reply to Sri C.V.Mohan’s above enquiry. There is no memorial or samadhi for this great yogi of India in Nimpura,Khargapur as the land acquired for his Ashram was later disposed off and this greatest intelectual and embodiment of knowledge itself died as ordinary, simple Brahmin in Grihastashrama wihtout discording his yajnopaveetha, without wearing Kaashaya and without getting any Deekshanama.Hence his mortal remains were consecrated on fire.Nothing remains there exccept a faded memory in some elite of the town-Murhty

There is a correction regarding his birthplace. His birthplace is not kaluvarayi, but LOGISA agraharam 3 km from gajapatinagaram. His mother ,who happened to be from PAPPU family delivered this child at LOGISA This info was told told to me by my grandmother when she was alive in 1959.Early education was imparted by his grand father along with his cousins at LOGISA. GLNMurthy has photographs of the place. This is for your information and correction if required. This was even mentioned in the book NAYANA by Late guntur lakshmikantham garu

Dear Shri Sasidhar and Shri Murthy ji,

I am one of the grandsons of Sri Kalyanarama Sastri, who along with his elder brother Subramania Sastri alias Appu, were virtually brought up by Nayana (Kavyakantha Ganapati Muni). It is very heartening to know that you have been doing a lot of work on Nayana.
I am too young to know either Nayana or even his son Mahadeva, but had the opportunity to spend some time with his daughter Vajramma, who had come for a brief stay in Bombay with my aunt, when I was a school boy and my father was working in Bombay.
I also remember that once, during a visit to Madras in the late 1960s I had accompanied her to Mangadu (then a desolate little temple) and Tiruverkadu.
However, my father Neelakant, has vivid recollections of Nayana.

I have seen references to my grandfather and grand uncle Appu in some of the correspondences between Nayana and Maharishi, and also in Nayana’s biography written by Sri G Krishna

Dear Arun, glad to meet u on this site.Iam the brother of Dr Ganti Sreerama Murhty, who is responsible for singing the glory of this unsung Mahatma India has ever produced. My brother wrote many articles on this great Muni ,translated the novel, Satyaprabha in to English and edited many works of the muni in Telugu. The Muni’s birth centenary was celbrated in Anakaplli and many other centers..Brought out a centenary commemorative volume”Jayanthi” which is most sought after volume for all the followers of Ganapathimuni. He was doing a lot service to the muni until his death in nov 1990.Unfortunately we lost the manuscript of English biography of the Muni in the River floods of Sarada @Anakapalli,Vizag Dt when he was alive.
What ever remained is I am preserving. I have actually done nothing but helping him in getting some material for “Jayanthi”.His last work of bringing out the Muni’s letters in print is still pending.I do not know where lies the original letters. However my brother copied them and I may soon publish them. There are somereferences in them about ur father and his brother Sri Appu gaaru.I hope that u have seen the Photo of the Muni with ur grand father and allthe members of the Muni,s family when they weere at Secundefrabad.Late Sri G.Krishna and my self actually wanted to locate ur family when we planned to conduct 125th birth day of the Muni.Ganapthi Muni gaaru died in 1936 and I will place the photos, which were presented to me by one of our relatives from Kargpur,(Now in Hyderabad) soon on the internet. -Blessings to u and ur family-Ganti Lakshmi Narasimha Murthy

    Dear Sri Murthi

Humble pranams. Thank you for responding to my post in this site. I am quite very thrilled to know that there are a lot of people like you who are doing their best to perpetuate the memory and teachings of Nayana.
I have had the opportunity of seeing the photograph of Nayana with my grandfather Sri Kalyanarama Sastri and my grand uncle Appu sastri, which was published in Sri G Krishna garu’s biography of Nayana. My father, who was close to Sri Krishna garu, has a copy of that book. In fact, my parents have told that they have heard of lot of work being done in near Bobbili, though they did not know exactly where. I have also heard that thanks to Sri Kapali Sastri, the entire works of Nayana have been published in Pondicherry. I am planning to acquire them, if they are still available in print, during my next visit to Pondicherry.
Just for your information, I have a copy of the 1931 edition of Gita Malika by Nayana, and every day recite the Indra gitam, Ganapathi gitam, Renuka Gitam and Ambika gitam. I and my family (my wife and son) also go to Renukambal temple at Padavedu every year. All of three brothers have Nayana’s picture in our puja.

From what I have read about Nayana and heard about him from my parents, the 75th anniversary of his attaining moksha should be falling next year. If anything is being planned for the occasion, i would like to participate in it, contributing my mite in whatever way I can.

    thanking you for your blessings
    Arun

Dear Arun, Thanks for ur Reply.I am glad to note that ur bothers are still keeping the Photo of the” greatest Yogi”(refer article in Times fo Indiadt 17-11-2008.)of India in ur poojaas Iam doing..I am also doing the same thing as u .Daily Indrasahasram,Renukageetham parayanam and Indra Mantra Japam is done by me.Indramantram was given to me by Sri Yamijala Padnabha swamy,a direct disciple of Nayan gaaru. He wrote articles and books on Ganapathi muni in Telugu and translated umasahasram in to Telugu. In the above reply I want u to correct u on the works of Nayana gaaaru .One is regarding the works of Muni gaaru. All the manuscripts of the works of Muni gaaru was preserved by the family members of late Viswamitra, an advocate @ SIRSI near Gokarnam (Karnataka). He was one of the staunch devotees of Muni gaaru. His sons are still holding them and giving opportunity to see the works and copy them but never to give away to any other permanantly. My brother late Dr.Ganti Sree ramamurthy copied some works and later SriNatesan Iyer, who was the direct disciple of Munigaaru, living in Ramanashramam till his death copied them and brought out in Print in 11 volumes. Now they are available at Ramanashramam.Compete set costs around Rs1800..Kapalisashtry of Pondicherry was responsible for bringing out authentic biography of Nayanagaru in Sanskrit..Secondly Nayanagaaru’s birth and death anniversaries are regularly celebrated by Ramana Bhktha Mandali,Vaani nagar ,Malkajgiri ,Hyderabad. They have constructed a beutiful memorial for Munigaaru In Kalavarai(Refer Ramanamaharshi Heritage Kavyakantha Ganapathimuni.com).They will accept ur contributions gladly any donations..Whatever I do I do with my own funds to Munigaaru.I do nto know wher e you are living. If it is in Hyderabad u may meet many devotees of Nayana gaaru there.Blessings-Murthy.

    Om namo Narayanaya.
I am very pleased to read all about Nayana. I read a TAMIL Book titled ‘Kavya Kanda Ganapati Muni’ authored by Krupakaran (Ramanashramam, Thiruvannamalai). I am an ardent admirer of Kavayakantha.
I enquired about the collected works of Nayana. Arunachala Ashrama in the US is having the collected works. I enquited about Chandodharshan with Bharatiya Vidhya Bhavan. They said it is not available.
We should not forget great souls like Nayana and we defenitely need to erect a memorial for Nayana.

    Dear Srinivasan,
I am Murthy from Banglore,I am surprised this morning when I opened my laptop for entering the data on Kavyakantha Vasisshta Ganapathi Muni’s Letters in telugu to his most beloved son (adopted)and his “Antevaasi”(a sishya who does every things for his Guru) Sri APPU sastry gaaru, a bank employee @ secuderabad , I found your message flashing on the screen.I do not think this is accidental but the grace of the great Muni is working behind it.I met Krupakaran in Hyderabad when he was a proffesor and was translating the data on the Muni in to Tamil. TheCollected works of Nayana (Sanskrit only) are availble with Ramanashram, Thiruvannamalai. Thanks to Late Natesan whose entire life was dedicated to Nayana’s works.Telugu collection as well as some important photos etc. are with me to be published. These were procured by my brother late Ganti Sreerama Murhty who spent half of his later life researching on Kavyakantha. As I was brought up by him from the age of five I want to make some squirall’s contribution to the cause of Srirama Murhty. As a part of it I started entering the data with me in to my laptop and forward it to all who are in need of it.I have already collected 25 Dwipada’s (Telugu poetry)form “Satya Prabha” a great historical, moral and ethical Novel (Not available in Print)ever written in Telugu by Kavyakantha(unfnished by the Muni and finished by his son Vasishta). This will be released on 17 th November , 132nd birth day fo the great Muni.ChandoDarshanam is not in print now.If u can wait for some time this work will be placed on internet for free down loading after discussing with the administrators of Telugu thesis .com.A memorial, it seems, already existing, in Kaluvarai village,Near Bobbili town of Vizianagaram district. I have not visited it after its inception but was informed by another devotee of the great Muni,Sri R.sreeraamulu of Secunderabad. If u want I can send u(free of cost )the English version of Satya Prabha, translated by my late brother,Dr.G.Srirama Murthy, which is as good as the Original. For any other information regarding the Muni u can depend on me.-ur’s friendly -Murthy

      Respected G L N Murthyjee,

After reading Bhagavan Raman Maharshi I came to know about the great scholar and his first disciple Sri Ganapati Shastri. Since currently I am living at Medinipur (15kms. from Kharagpur) I rushed to Kharagpur to find out the Ashram he had established. But nobody could be able to give any information about this. I returned disappointed and since then searching for the place but of no avail. After reading these emails I could be able to piece together the lose threads and hopeful of contacting all the sources at Kharagpur to reach the holy Ashram. Since I am interested to read the English version of “Satyapravbha” I contacted you a few minutes back in your above mentioned mobile and land line numbers. But both the phones remained no reply. Will you please help me to get a copy of this great book? Looking forward to hear from you at the earliest.

    Dear Murthyji,
Your mail brought tears in my eyes. I never get tired reading about Nayana. I feel I had some past association with him indirectly. When I read about him, I am taken several years back, and feel a Prathyaksha presence of Muni, Sudhanva, Deivaratha, Kapali Sastri and all. My shashtanga namaskarams to all those holy men of yesteryears and today who still perpetuate the glory of great souls.
I will be glad to receive an electronic copy of Sathyapraba and some historical photographs of Muni, which I will always cherish.
(I don’t follow Telugu, but follow Tamil and English).
    Pranams to all.

  23. V V Balakrishnan November 13, 2010 at 3:15 am #

I am glad to have come across this site giving a lot of Information on the great Nayana, who was very dear to my father late venkatasubrahmanyan &late M C Subrahmanian founder of Public Health centre,Lakeview road, chennai.

Respecting their wishes,we have been celebrating November 17th as his Jayanthi day at the Renukambal Temple at Padavedu, near Arni in Tamilnadu, with the kind co-operation of the temple authorities..For,here in the famous Renukambal temple,he has recited his most popular “Renuka Geetam”in praise of the most powerful presiding Deity of the temple.

I must honestly express here, that my exposure to Nayana is limited to attending this function on every november 17th,since four years. This celebration was initiated by late M C Subrahmanian(affectionately addressed as MC) 20 years ago.

He has passed on this legacy to C B Srinivasan, grand son of one Sadasiva Sastry, who has lived along with nayana in Tiruvannamalai .He happens to be my my brother in law at Arni, requesting him to continue, without much fanfare.

Even he has passed away in 2009 and his wife(my elder sisterMrs.Shantha Srinivasan) continues the tradition. We the brothers of her only do the ‘squirril sahayam to this noble effort,by attending this function without fail every year

As ordained by MC,nothing spectacular is done on the celebration. An abishekam is done toRenukambal and asthohra archana is done.Lalitha sahasra namam is chanted by those whoare present. After this we come out of the Gharba gruha and at the entrance a mable plaque of “Renuka Geetham” is installed. There on this day only Nayana’s photo is kept and an Ashtothra archana is performed.

After thatNayana’s Renuka Geetam is recited and Maha prasad is distributed to those who attended and also Anna daanam is given to public.Since MC has desired that this annual celebration should always be on a low key, emphasising on as much less expense as possible. We strictly go by that advise.

I would like to be in touch with all those who have some connection with Nayana and contribute my mite in a humble manner.I am based in Hyderabad.
    with warm feelings,
    V V Balakrishnan.

    Hi ,
Does anyone have the time of birth of Ganapathi Muni. Just interested astrology wise. I am keen to see patterns for memory especially comparing with other personalities known for their memory like T Subba Row, Sarvepalli Radhkrishnan etc.

The date of birth I have is Nov 17th, 1878 at Bobbili. Now I am looking for the time of birth and also any scanned horoscopes of him will be helpful to cross check.

I also know he himself was an astrologer and has written a small work on it.Any links to that material is appreciated.

    Thanks,

You are doing a great job. My regards to you. I am great grand daughter of sri Bhima Sastry who was Nayana’s elder brother. It is great to know someone preserving his works so deligently. Regards from my whole family, we are eternally greatful to all of you.

Dear Sharada, I am glad to note that you are in the latest generation of Ayyalasomyajula clan, which was placed on the world map of ancient Rushees by the great Muni. I think I met ur grand father Narasimha Murthy gaaru in Hyderabad. He brought some manuscript of the great Muni copied by him in beautifull calligraphy.I would like to correct u about the great poet of west Bengal Ambikadatta of Nawadweepa. He was the President of Harisabha where all great schlors of India were testing thier knoledge of shastras and getting titels signed by him. When Ganapathi sastrigaaru also stood for the test at the age of 22 the president Ambikadatta was so irritated that he alone did not sign the title “kavyakantha” bestowed on him by 15 eminent scholors from length and breadth of India.14 have signed the document and I am having the printed copy of it in Bengali.Original may be with Purander. The Hari Sabha in Nawadweep, near Kolkatta still exists(150 years old )maintained by Chaitanya Mahaprabhu sihsyas.I visited it long back and got a photo of it.More in next mail-blessings-ur’s affecti0nately-Ganti Lakshmi Narasimha Murthy

    My humble pranaam to everyone.
    Recently i went to Girivalam.
Prior to starting girivalam i visited Ramanaashram and bought some books.
One of them is ‘Kavya Kanta Ganapathy Munivar’ by Dr. Kirubanandan. This is in Tamil.
I am getting to know him for the first time, as part my inclination to know the people who were associated with Ramanashri.
Today i picked up this book in the morning and finished in one go by evening!
It was such an absorbing and satisfying reading.
I am an ordinary person and belong to Scheduled Caste.
What appeared to me is that he must be made known to wider public, especially for his divinity, versatility, energy, dedication to many causes and much more. He must be seen from various perspectives to realize solutions to our personal life and to social maladies.
The book ‘Rashtra Nibhandham’ authored by him would be very relevant at present, i felt.
I also felt that his views on untouchability also must be known to the victims and the perpetrators alike in order to make our society a little more harmonious.

I found this site also make very valuable reading.
I can only thank my time for having found this book and Ramanaashram for publishing it.
i would like to get to know more about him and feel happy.

    With regards.

    Om namo Narayanaya.
    Dear Sri Anbazhagan,
It is only your poorva punniyam that has led you to enquire and read about Ganapati Muni. For him, there was no caste or creed. He is a pure Tapasvi who descended on earth as a Pramaanam (evidence) that our Vedic Rishis were real. I appreciate your interest and my best wishes that you make more people aware of our great people and their doctrines.

Dear Sri Anbazhagan, Iam happy to note that u have read the Tamil version of “Nayna” translated by my firend Dr.Kripanandam.I think today is the auspecious day as the great Muni’s efforts have come to frution. In this connection I would like to inform theat the Great Muni was also presided over the “Harijana Mahasabha wing ” of Andhra Mahasabha general body meetings. There are some more facts which i will let u know later as am now busy at Somanath temple (Gujarat) and it is Harathi time at the temple.Great that ur a learned friend of ours-Murthy

  46. S.V.Anbazhagan September 24, 2011 at 11:59 am #

    Many thanks, Sri GLNMurthy .
It is very kind of you to spare your precious time to add the note above.

In continuation, i hope it may not be seen inappropriate, if i bring the following points to your considered attention.
Vyakti Vikas Kendra,Bangalore, india has published a small book, “The Heritage of Dalits” in the year 2001.
The topic is initiated in the book by an essay under the title “Sri Sri Ravishankar Speaks”.

In the Preface it is said:
“In the pages that follow, you will discover so many noble souls who have worked to eliminate discrimination in society.
Very little is known to the public about the sacrifices made by these personalities, who were least interested in publicity for themselves and in politicising their social work. They have no political agenda, no commercial interest; all that they wished was to uplift human values which keep slipping again and again in the world. Therefore, it is only fair for us to remember and acknowledge their efforts to reform the society from time to time.”

    Further it is said:
“To eliminate discrimination, we need to work from two directions:
1.To educate the upper castes on human values and scriptural injunctions and illuminate the fact that our scriptures neither sanction nor subscribe to any inhuman attitude.
2.To make the lower castes aware that their self-dignity springs from within and that access to wisdom is their birthright, thereby establishing self-confidence and a sense of equality in their consciousness.”

It is in this background that Tapasvi Ganapathy Muni’s speeches and writings against untouchability gains importance, i felt.

As a first step i was wondering whether i would be able to get a copy of his speeches and writings on the above topic , either in Sanskrit itself or an English translation of them. On perusal of the same, Vyakti Vikas Kendra may be informed include a write-up on his contribution in the next edition of the book mentioned above.

Reading them may lead to some further action with the good wishes of all devotees and the Tapaswi, i hope.

I am actually a samaanyan; not a scholar, not a devotee, but merely a thinker on the topic, getting to nknow certain personalities and certain perspectives for the first time. My suggestion may please be considered with this in view for its significance.

    With sincere regards,

    anbazhagan

Dear Anbazhagan,Just now I returned from my pilgrimage tour to Dwaraka etc.It is true that little is known about the great people who worked for the amelioration of the society.Their altruistic lives are nearly forgotten. One such personality is great Ganapathimuni garu.In this connection I would like to inform you that the “Muni” title was given to Sri Ganapathi Sastry garu,by Sri Bhagayareddy garu,a leader of the down trodden people of Hyderabad. He offered “Brhma Radham” to Sri Ganapathi Sastry garu.Unfortunately none of the speaches of the” Muni” was recorded even though he was the president of the congress reception commitee in Tiruvannamalai, and attended Belgaum congress general body and spoke at length in Sanskrit. It will be a great help even if we get the synopisis of the speaches-ur’s friendly Murthy

DearSri.GLN Murthy as well as all our friends interested in our Nayana and living near chennai:

    Namaskar!

As has been the practice for the past 21 years this year also we will be celebrating the Jayanthi of Kavyakanta Ganapathi muni at Padaiveedu, Renukambal temple on 17th November,2011.

The celebration starts at 8.00. A.M with the abishekam for the Deity, followed by archana. Then,an archana with an ashtothra is chanted for the Nayana’s photo, kept in front of the place where his RenukaGeetam is inscribed on the wall.

We disburse after chanting the Renuka Gheetam by those who have assembled after the distribution of the prasadam .If permitted by the temple authorities, Annadaanam is to be organised for poor people of the area, after the function.

Since the practice has been to organise the function with all sincerity, in a simple manner, expending limited resource only,as desired by MC Subrahmanian,we shun pomp and publicity which may mar the solemnity of the occasion.

We will be happy to have you in our midst on this occasion and you can get in touch with us at any time.I live in Hyderabad and any of you interested may contact me through my mobile phone.

    with warm feelings,

I am now reading for the 2nd time (Dr.Krupanandan’s Tamil Book) on Nayana. Meanwhile, I just downloaded from the internet, Nayana’s biography by Dr.G.Krishna. This book is available for free download from the internet. I want to ask a few questions: a) Dr. Krupanandan’s book’s cover page contains Nayana’s photo in a sitting posture. Is it his real photo? b) Dr.Krishna’s book contains a few photos, but they are not legible. Are there any other photos of Nayana available, other than the ones available in the internet?.

I WILL BE EVER INDEBTED IF SOME ONE COULD SHARE WITH ME OTHER PHOTOS OF NAYANA. I can maintain complete confidentiality if required.

Whatever photo of Nayana” Publsihed with his name printed as Nayana or Ganapthimuni or kavyakantha were all original photos of Nayana only.Kripanandam’s book or G.Krishna’s Book or S.R.Leela’s Book or any book on Nayana contains all the photos which are in circulation from a long time.Nobody can dare publish any other photo of Nayana with the name of Nayana.Only authenticated photo of him is with his signature in Telugu,All others are taken by variuos others at different timesWhat more authenticity u want.if u have in mind any other photos which are not yet published it is for the person who posses them to publish at the appropriate time.one scuh photo u missed to see it when I last brought it to Padaiveedu on 17-11-2011.U might have heard of Nayna’s works in sanskrit were held in lock and key at Sirsi by the sons of Late viswamitra, a disciple of Nayana. All great people have gone there to see and copy it if they want. Viswamitra’s sons never publshed any works of Nayana. That being the case why for a photo or two people are in hurry to see them which will see the light of the day when it is supposed to.Whatever photos of Nayana available are in black and white only.Whatever available in colour are very recently added colours to old photo only.
u may write to me regarding any other clarification-Murthy

    Pranaams to all..

I am Surya NArayana Murthy Ayyalasomayajula from Vakkalanka village of East Godavari. I happened to know the linkage of Ayyalasomayajula clan to ganapati Muni and felt proud about that. As a co-incidence our family (my great grandfather learnt SrinVidya from Ayyalasomayajula Satyanarayana – who has brought it from Varanasi under upadesam) also knows Sri Vidya and as times have passed it is getting dwindled.

Anyway glad to know about this blog. My mother’s surname is ‘pappu’ of visweswara agraharam near amalapuram.

Dear Sr Murthy Garu, It was by sheer chance that I stumbled upon this blog. I am greatly devoted to Nayana Garu and mentally prostrate at his lotus feet everyday. I am an Engineer by profession and a freelance writer for Deccan Herald newspaper. I write on spirituality, philosophy, carnatic music, general articles etc. I had written an article for the Oasis Column of Deccan Herald on Ganapati Muni Garu sometime ago. There was nothing new or exceptional in it. Just a small article of about 450 words. I plan to write more on his works. My mind is always engaged in matters spiritual and noble souls. I try to read, assimilate and write as much as my time permits to.

Bharat Charitra pariksha is a research work about the period of Mahabharat. The event of Rigved Samhita (War between Kutsa and Shusna, and the role of Indra at that time)
was the base for Karna-Arjuna war. However the orivginal story was set back and Mahabharat’s events gained the popularity .
In this book , Ganapati Muni , clerly mentioned the particulars about the events from Rigveda.

I am translating the same to Kannada language and the translation work is completed now.

    Om Namo Narayanaya.
    Dear Puttu Kulkarni,
I am excited to learn that you have rendered in Kannada, Nayana’s Bharat Charitra Pariksha. For lack of original knowledge in Telegu / Kannada, I will not be able to read it. An English Translation will be highly helpful. Meanwhile, I was doing some independent research on the historicity of Mahabharata war. I retrieved from internet an old book by Pandit Kota Venkatachelam. The name of the book is Age of Mahabharata War (published in 1959). He clearly points out the age is about 3138 BC. In this book, he strongly defends this date and criticizes European and psedo-scholars who fix the date between 900-1500 BC, just to tarnish the historicity of our great Dharma.
I want to know, does Nayana indicate any date or period of the Mahabharat War and if so what is it? I request you to do a free rendering in English of Nayana’s treatise on Mahabharatha.
    Thank You.

Dear Srinivasan, I do not whether u have read the centenary commemorative volume of Kavykantha vasishta Ganapthi Muni brought out by my late brother Dr.Ganti sreerama Murthy, retired principal, A.M.A.L.college, Anakapalii. Andhrapradesh, during the Muni’s centenary @Anakaplli,in 1978.He founded “Kavykantha Bharathi” @ Anakapalli in Andhrapradesh. He brought out some books written by Nayna and out of print at that time.He also brought out the above commemorative volume which gives a birds eye view of the versatile personality of Kavyakantha.I have distributed all the volumes to the devotees free of cost between 2000-2010.That volume contains an article of my late brother “The contribution of Ganapathimuni to the vedic studies”.In that article my brother has written that Ganapathi muni fixed the date of Mahabharatha war 138 generations before Maurya Chandragupta. This was calculated on astronomical acounts given in Maha Bharatha, Bhagavatha purana. The date tallies with the date given by Magasthanese in his Indica. you may refer Bharatha Rahasyam lectures given by kavyakantha at the invitation of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishna (when he was the vice chanceler of the Andhra University in 1934.My brothers contribution was in 1978.u may now refer to the recent volume nine of “Collective works of Ganapathimuni” edited by late Natessn Ayyer for Ramanashramam Thiruvannamalai 2007.This is as far as Ganapathimuni concerned.Fixing of date of Mahabharatha has a lot of literature.Any way u may take it as 7000 years back to our generation as far as Kavyakantha is concerned-Murthy

  60. Puttu Kulkarni February 9, 2012 at 2:42 am #

    Dear Srinivasan,

It is pleasure to exchange the ideas about the writings of Ganapatimuni. Bharat Chartra pariksha written by him in a small forest village (KULAVE) near Sirsi of Karnatak state. He delivered the lectures on the same topic in Walter of Andhra during 1930-31.Fortunately the book published by a devotee and printed in Banaras. (Kashi)

He clearly mentioned the period of Mahabharata in the chapter of YUGAVICAR. I will try to translate to English and present the same thru this site.

My village is so near to Gokarna -where Ganapati muni stayed some period and shifted to upper Ghat area due to the climatic condition of this coastal area.

The devotees of Ganapati muni in upper Ghat section of Uttara Kannada (Karnatak State ) have been arranging function every year in remembrance of Ganapati muni and Indra Yajna.

I received a copy of Bharat Charitra Pariksha from the family member of that village Kulave, and tried to translate to my mother tongue Kannada.

Any how , I will send the English translations of the concerned chapters of Bharat Charitra Pariksha and the period of Mahabharata War and other.

  62. Puttu Kulkarni Hegde-Kumta-581 330 February 23, 2012 at 11:23 am #

    Dear Srinivasan,

    Pl find the following about Bharat Charitra pariksha of KavyaKantha Vasistha Ganapati Muni;

When the calculation of Day and Night was based on 6 hours system, the duration of Yugas was 12000 yrs. At the same time “Ushas Time” calculation was in 5 hours system. There was a system of classification of 5 days of 25 noon and 25 nights. As per this system Treta is 1000 years. Dvapara is 1000 years. Kruta -5000 yrs and Kaliyuga – 5000 yrs. (Total 12000 years)

It is already accepted that Treta and Dvapara are Sandhya yugas. So Kruta and Kaliyuga are now important to calculate the period. The same matter is already discussed in Mahabharata as “ Sandhya –Sandhyaamsh”subject.

Aitreya Brahman (before Mahabharata period) tells this “Kalih shyano bhavati samjeehastu Dvaparh”

Amarasimha clearly mentioned that , this difference between Manava Vrsha and Divya Varsha as “Manvantaram tu divyaanaam yugaanam eka saptatih”. It shows that Divyatva is not for the calculation of the period.

Bhagavt Purana and other Puranas mixed this Divya varsha and Manava Varsha .It was considered as Pancha samvatsrara system. “ Chandram preetyam Souram divyam ’ is is the best indicator to know this clearly. Divya varsha calculation system might be the hypothesis of Souti Muni (Period ; After King Ashok). If it is considered the calculation of the yugas as per this Bhagavata puruna and the writings of Souti Muni , then it is not possible to prove the period of Mahabharata War at the beginning of Kaliyuga itself.

Even Vishnu Purana also considered this matter in360 calculation system. As per this calculation the duration of Kaliyuga will be 1200 yrs. With all this analyzing, it is considered that , Kaliyuga is already completed it’s tenure during 1898 vikarini Samvatsra..

Acharya Varhamihir mentioned inhis “Pancha Siddhantika”, “ Ravi-Shasinoh pamcha yugam varshaani Pitamahopadisthani”. He mentioned about Pitamaha Siddhanata”. But it is not available. At the same time Romaka Siddhanata tells about the “Sun and Moon Siddhanata” of 2850 years calculation system. However this is most advanced than Vedanta Jyotishya.

Even in Siddhanta or Surya Siddhanta , there is no indication about the classification of Yugas. But the writings after 5th century(AD) gave more importance about this Divya varsha and tried to glorify the situation.

If we consider the Bhagavat Purana as the base for the calculation of the years of Yuga, it may not possible to reach the goal. Either Vasistha Muni or any other scholars , till trying to solve this “Unsolved Problem”

If anybody known about “Daksha Siddhanta ’ , “Pitamaha Siddhanta’’ can support to get the conclusion.

Bhagavat Purana itself is the main reason for all these confusions about the period of Yugas.

Bhagavat Purana and other Puranas mixed this Manushya Varsha and Divya Varsha.and i led to this confusion. Divya varsha might be the imagination of Souti Muni. His period is already considered during the period of Ashok-Chandragupat Mourya tenure.
This calculation is fully based on the calculation of the period as per Chandramana (introduced thru Yavan Jyotishya system from Shaka Brahmanas). This system considers the first nakshatra is Ashwini.

But Vasistha Ganapti Muni mentioned the events of Mahabharat of Souti Muni was based on the events of Smhita period. Souti Muni converted it into Purana (Mahabharat ) and glorified the period and also the personality of Krishna (Bhagavat ).This Bharat Charitra pariksha is in Sanskrit published during 1971. and the same matter was presented by Ganapati Muni at Walter (Andhra) during 1931-32.

I don’t know whether the published book reached the market or not . Only a few copies(3-4 copies) are available with his close-relative. All other books (495 copies might be hidden some where.

Since 2000 I have been searching this . In the biography of Ganapati Muni also it is considered that , the book (Bharat Charitra pariksha is not completed and not published!!)

He compares the personalities of Samhita period and Mahabharat personalities.
Sushna or Sushrava of samhita period is Karna in Mahabharat
Kutsa or Etasha or Phalguni of Samhita is Arjuna in Mahabharat
Vajri or Indra of that period is Sri Krishna in Mahabharat

And also he clearly mentioned the calculation of the Yuga period based on the other system than Bhagavat Purana.

Acharya Varhamihir wrote in his famous book “ Pancha siddhantika” about the other scholors 1) Latadeva 2) Latachaarya 3) Simhacharya 4) Arybhata 5) Pryadumna and 6) Vijayanandi.
However these all famous personalities were before Mahabharat (written by Souti Muni). We don’t know what was the system for the calculation of the period at that time . If it is possible to search the workings of these personalities, it may help us to solve this problem.

Dear Sri Kulkarni( and Sri Srinivasan)
Thank you for a sharing info regarding Mahamuni’s work Bharata Charitra Pariksha. You got my attention when I read the duration of different yugas. As a kid I was always told that Kaliyuga was of 432,000 years duration.
Long ago, I read Autobiography of a yogi by Shri Yogananda and in it(page 193) he mentions in a foot note regarding duration of yugas as explained in his Guru’s(Shri Yukteshwar) book The Holy Science. I ended up buying Holy Science too back then and there’s a detailed explanation of Yuga calculation from shri Yukteshwar. His interpretation of four slokas from Manusamhita made sense to me. The confusion I have in my mind is what I see in our planet today. While we have witnessed an exponential explosion in evolution through technological advances since the dawn of industrial revolution, we also have witnessed the other end of the spectrum in terms of human behavior…World Wars, Corruption, Terrorism…you name it. Perhaps, us humans have the natural tendency to focus on the bad/negative and magnify it while whatever good has been happening around us…….have been forgotten quickly. Perhaps if we look at the big picture in terms of movement from yuga to yuga and the enormity of Time since the dawn of creation, these past 500 years or even the 5 thousand odd years after the departure of Lord Krishna, perhaps is nothing but a small capsule.
Anyway, according to Yukteshwarji’s interpretation of those four slokas from Manusamhita….starting with,
      “Chaturyaahu sahasraani varshaanantu krutam yugam………………..”
      Satya/Kruta yuga is 4800 years including 4000 years(plus 400+400 years each for yuga sandhi), Treta is 3600 years(including 300 + 300 years), Dwapara is 2400(including 200+200 for sandhi) and Kali 1200(including 100 +100).
I have studied sanskrit for 3 years in addition to high school and pre university but it’s not enough for me to decipher the intricate meanings of these slokas.

If you can get hold of a copy of Manusamhita and HOly science I suppose you could compare to your interpretation of Mahamuniji’s treatise. If I get some time, I could try scanning a copy of those four pages or so from Holy Science and email it to you. I suppose you can find a copy of Holy Science at Gangaram’s or Sapna bookstore in Bengaluru.

I thought you might like this information so I decided to share it with you.

      As to Mahamuniji,
A few years back I had gone back home(Sagar) and as usual visited my best friend’s house in a village nearby. His mother began talking to me about the great Mahamuni. I’m not sure whether she is related to the late Shri Viswamitra but she did mention that a lot of mahamuniji’s manuscripts were with his family. Her son happened to be studying astrology and was studying Mahamuni’s astrology book. I suppose it was translated to english or Kannada by someone. Being obsessed with adhyatma as a kid, it got my attention and I enquired more and more. About three years ago there was another website which was selling individual volumes of Mahamuniji’s works but now I don’t seem to find it. Perhaps anyone who contributes to this website might shed some light into individual volumes. I recall some of them had been translated into english.

      Warm Regards
      Shreenath

        Dear Shrinath,

Thanks for the information. I have the copy of “An Autobiography of Yogi”.However, the calculation system of “The period” is based on the Solar period and considered with the Human years. So , the difference is quite natural.

Kavyakantha Muni and Maharshi Shri Aurabindo tells the same idea. The information about the matter is written in Poetry “Savitri” in metaphoric manner and the same is explained with the details in Bharat Chritra pariksha by Muni.

It is great pleasure to receive the copy of the Manusamhita and HOly science from you. I am a resident of a tiny forest village in coastal belt of Kumta and it may not possible to get all books . Any how I will try to get the same . If I received early , I will inform .

I have an idea to translate the same Bharat Charitra pariksha in Englishalso. Now I am busy intranslating Savitri in to Kannada (ILike Mandakranta CHandas) . The first part is already completed.

        Waiting for your voice.
        regards

      • Shreenath November 2, 2012 at 9:21 am #

        Dear Kulkarniji,
Thank you for a detailed response. I intend to spend sometime scanning those initial pages pertaining to astrology in Shri Yukteshwar’s book. I don’t have manusamhita. If you have had a chance you could also check out another book by an IAS officer and author from AP. His name is Veda Vyas and he wrote a book called Astronomical Dating of the Mahabharata War. He also wrote another book called Pracheena Bhagavad Gita which has an additional 45 or so verses which were lost(that’s what the author claims).
How did you end up in a small place like Hegde after being in Dharwar. I suppose you know a few people in nearby villages. I have lots of friends and some distant relatives in Haldipura, Navilgon, Murur, etc.
        Warm Regards
        Shreenath

Dear Shri  Shrinath, I am from Ranebennur not from Dharwad. I am working here since 1984. Now my residential place is Anakemane-Mururu -Tq;Kumta. (No contamination by microwave facilities.).  I have a copy of Shri Vedavyas of Andhrapradess and the book is providing the details about the date and the period of Sri Krishna only.

However Vasistha Ganapati Muni writes about the deviation of the culture thru the imposing of “Chandra Vamsha and the ideology of Chandra cuklture”. Even the same matter is researched by Shri Sham. Ba. Joshi. Sri Aurabindo mentions the same matter in his Comment on Rigveda.Savitri explains the same matter. But the language and the symbolic representation in yogic language in English is challenging the present era.  It is the necessity of the present to attend the comparative study of Ramana Maharshi, Sri Aurabindo, Kavyakantha Muni and Sham Bha Joshi and even to the extent Satyakama (even though he is linkled with Shakti cult) .  This requires a team work.  It seems that , you are so familiar with this area. I know some personalities in this area and I have been contributing the articles to the local magazines(Nagarika from Honavar, Lokadhavani from Sirsi and some others.) I will try to get the copy of Manusamhita and inform you soon. Regards Puttu Kulkarni—

Dear Kuklkarni sir, Bharatha charitra Pariskha was published in Devanagari by one Mr Aryasomayajual Madhukeswara Rao of Vizianagaram 1n 1971 with the help of Vidwan Ganapthi Bhatt Hasangi. But Sri Ganapathi Bhatt died before it’s publication and his son Sri Ramakrishna Bhatt has born the cost of printing. The book was printed @ Varanasi.Late Madhukeswara rao was the relative of Sri Kavykantha and devoted most of the life for propagating the works of Nayana From Nepal to Kanyakumari. He has donated books of Nayana to Tribhuvan Univarsity ,Khatmandu and Belgaum university, Karnataka also.He presented many copies of Bharatha charitra pariksha to many sanskrit scholars. One such book is with me presented to Sri P.Lakshmana Murhty ,A close friend of my brother late Dr Ganti Sreerama Murthy, retired principal ,A.M.A.L.college Anakapalli, Andhraparadesh. He gave that copy to my brother for Kavyakantha centenary@ Anakaplli. The book was never marketed. But He might have distributed to many libraries and sanskrit pandits in Andhraparadesh-Murthy

      Dear Sri Murthy,

Thanks for the information. I have received one copy from Dr.Shastry of Kuluve village in Sirsi taluk of Karnatak. Dr Shastry is in 80+. He old that , this Book is written by Ganapatimuni when he stayed in his house at Kuluve.

My place is Hegde-Kumta (30 km from Gokarna)
Every year tha said shastry family is arranging Indra Yajna and the other rituals as per the writings of Ganapatimuni.

        Dear Kulkarni ji,

It is a world of strange coincidences that we live in or may be it is the will of Kavyakantha Ganapathi Muni, known to us as Nayana.

As some other followers of this blog know, my grandfather Kalyanarama Sastry and grand uncle Subramania Sastry alias Appu Sastry were adoptive sons of Nayana and had for long lived in Secunderabad.

The coincidence here is that my wife hails from Mangalore region and their family temple is the Katyayani-Baneshwar temple at Aversa, which is less than 20 km from Gokarna. In fact, I have been to Aversa several times, the last time being in January 2011. During that trip I had also visited Gokarna, but for some reason or the other, I could not try and seek out the place where Nayana stayed. Nor did I realise at that time the Sirsi, where he spent a lot of time, was also in that region.

There are so many things, that I am now learning about Nayana, especially about his links with Kumta, which I have passed by during my visits to Aversa.

I would very much like to meet you and all others you have mentioned during my next visit to Aversa, which may possibly in December this year.

Hoping to meet you in person later this year and learning more about my adoptive great grandfather.

Dear Sri sharma garu, I am seing ur mail today only.I do not know how i missed it.I got some photos of Nayana and I can upload them. But this is not a website/blog exclusively for Nayana. It is not etiquette to write/publish material as if it is our own blog/site on other’s sites. We have accidentally started this communication process and it is going on well.It does not mean that we have to take liberties with the owners of the site.If u want photos u may write ur adress in my email address.I will send them to u free of cost.In the alternative u may wait some more time until Mr Arun develops his site on Nayana and u may get everything on that-Murthy

I am delighted to stumble upon this exchange of communications between the
devotees of the Kavyakantha.who was one of the leading lights of our community-the others, to name a few, being S/ Sri Adibhatla Narayana Das, Adibhatla Ramamurthy Sastry,Peri Kasinadha Sastry, and Tata Subbaraya.Sastry. I would like to know if there is any biography more authentic than “Nayana” by Sri Gunturu

    Om Namo Narayanaya.
In this Chithirai month, we read about several incidents of Chariot Festivals in various temples. There are a few incidents where the Chariot had broken down and the axel got broken. In one such incident recently, a few people died. All these events do not augur well for the society.
I am reminded of one incident of Nayana’s connection with Thiruvannamalai Chariot Festival. During the festival, the temple chariot refused to move, inspite of several people pulling it. That night, the Nayana had a dream about this incident and he was urged to visit the Chariot site. Immediately Nayana went to the see the Chariot and people narrated about its refusal to move. Nayana prayed to Shiva and after a few minutes, the chariot started rolling.
When will we get such a leading light like Nayana?

    Dear Sri G L N Murthy,

Translation of Bharath Charitra pariksha into Kannada is completed.

Kavyakantha is known to a few in this area , hence there is no support to publish the same book .Any how it is available in soft copy thru email.

    Translation to English is continued,

If any devotee is known both Kannada and Telugu can translate to Telugu . It may help to all devotees and the relatives of Kavyakantha Muni.

Kavyakantha is considered as Guru of Maharshi Daivaraat of Gokarna. Daivaraat’s family members are in Ashokavana of Gokarna. This Ashokvana is a branch of Sri Rmachandrapur Math .

I am searching the links about the conflicts between Surya Siddhanta and Chandra Parampara. Kavyakantha Muni clearly showed the way how this Surya Siddhanata is cornered and the deviation led us the present clumsy situation in tradition and the culture also.

    Dear Lakshmiji,
It is heartening to note that NAYANA (Gunturu Lakshmikantham’s book on Nayana) has been reprinted in Telugu. Can you mention the publication details?

Dr. Krishna’s book on NAYANA (available freely) also requires REPRINT with complete proof-reading and with more pictures. Do you know if any effort is underway on this?

I would like have a copy of the souvenir book, “JAYANTHI”, which was published as Kavyakantha Ganapati Muni’s centenary publication. I am very interested to read the English articles contained therein. (I don’t follow Telugu or Sanskrit).

    Best Regards.

      Dear all

My name is Surya Ayalasomayajula, Grand son of Sri Ramamurthy of Challapeta, near Parvathipuram. I am in the process of creating a family tree. I learned that Aysolla family was split across different agraharams. I do not know all of them. I learned that some of my great great grand fathers settled down in Chandakapeta and kalava rai, It is also possible my understanding may be wrong. None of the family members from my father-side are alive to guide me to expand the family tree that I am creating. I seek your help in this regard. Please visit geni.com and create your family tree. It is possible that we may be connected somewhere somehow. Also, it is possible that I am related to Sri Ganapati Muni garu somewhere. I seek your help to solve this puzzle.

    • Puttu Kulkarni November 12, 2015 at 1:11 am #

Bharat Charitra pariksha , published during 1970, and a few copies were delivered to only a few persons and universities. I received the xerox copy of the original book from the devotee of Kavyakantha Ganapati muni at Kulve- village of Sirsi(Karnataka) . I have no idea , whether this Sanskrit book is reprinted or not.

Pl contact Rmanashrama of Aurnachala to get the details about the book of Ganapatimuni.

Dear sir , regarding the query on Bharatha Chaitra Pareeksha of Sri Ganapathimuni I wouldlike to inform you that it was originally printed in sanskrit by one of the relatives of the Muni by name Sri Aryasomayajula Madhkeswara rao of Vizianagaram in 1971.It is true that very few copies were printed and only sankrit scholars were given  some copies in 1971.Now the Ramanashramam Thiruvannamali published all the sanskrit works of Ganapathimuni in 11 volumes and volume 9 is completely dedicated to Bharatha charitra Pareeksha of Ganapathimuni.

    .ಸಾವಿತ್ರಿ -(ಮುಂದುವರೆದುದು)
    ದಳ 1 ಕಣ 4 (ಇ)

    ತನ್ನದೇ ಶಕ್ತಿ ಜೊತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸತತ ಕಣ್ಣು-ಮುಚ್ಚಾಲೆಯಾಡಿ;
    ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಯಾ ದ್ರವ್ಯ ಕಾರಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬಲು ಮಂದ ಮಂದ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ,

    ತನ್ನ ಕ್ರೀಡೆಗಳ ಅವಕಾಶಕಾಗಿ ಈ ಲೋಕ ಸೃಷ್ಟಿ-ಲೀಲೆ ,
